Sokol Park

Latest News

Phase 1 improvements began in early 2022 and were completed in October 2022. Work included adding light fixtures along the park access road and at the intersection of Watermelon Road and Sokol Park. Watermelon Road was widened and turn lanes were added at the entrance to the park to improve access and safety. The access road and parking lot near the model airplane field were repaved.  The cross-country trail path was widened and gravel was added.

Phase 2 improvements are expected to begin in Spring 2023. Work will include repaving existing parking lots located near the community gardens and near the Field of Dreams. A new traffic circle will be added near the Field of Dreams that will improve traffic flow and provide access to a new parking lot located near the existing baseball fields in Sokol Park North. Storm water drainage improvements will help fields respond better during heavy rain events. This phase is expected to be complete by the end of Summer 2023.

Identified in the community parks survey as one of the most popular destinations, Sokol Park hosts a variety of athletic, recreational, and leisure activities.  In addition, the city received a feasibility study report that indicated the size and desirable location of Sokol Park affords many opportunities to attract the sports tourism market, after making appropriate improvements. With this and other community input, a plan was developed to phase projects in over time.

Goals and Impact
  • Improve safety and access to and within the park
